Hi, I'm Kiara Hosie (she/her). I'm an oboist and reed-maker of over 10 years based in Vancouver, BC. who is passionate about new music and diversity in the classical world. I teach private lessons in-person and online, as well as in-school sectionals and clinics. Please email me to book a lesson, tutoring session, or order reeds!

I hold a BMus in musicology and sound studies with a minor in psychology from the University of Victoria (2023) and an MMus in oboe performance from the University of British Columbia (2026). I've had the pleasure of studying with Russell Bajer, Michelle Feng, and Geronimo Mendoza. When I am not appearing as a soloist, I am also an active performer in ensembles across the Greater Victoria and Vancouver areas. I am experienced with a range of styles including contemporary music, chamber music, musical theatre, symphony orchestra, and wind band.

As a private oboe teacher with over 6 years of experience, I take a patient and individualised approach. I'll meet you where you're at, helping you set and meet your own musical goals to reach your full potential. Lessons with me focus not only on building technical skills and learning repertoire, but also developing aural skills, theory knowledge, healthy habits, and strong practice routines. With experience teaching ages 10 - 65, I welcome students of all ages and abilities— it's never too early or late to start!

I am available for private lessons in-home and online, as well as in-school sectionals. Private lessons are 45 or 60 minutes, depending on age and experience. I have flexible availability, including evenings and weekends. Please connect with me for more details.

Reeds are every oboist's nightmare... but they don't have to be! I am pleased to offer handmade oboe reeds for order. I ship anywhere in Canada for a flat rate, and offer free local pickup in Vancouver, BC. Please contact me to place an order. If you have any preferences or special requests (ex. A=442 tuning), please indicate this in your message.

I provide one complimentary reed at your first private lesson. Education discounts are available for schools who would like to place an order (2 reed minimum) at the same time as booking a sectional/clinic— please contact me for more details.

Note: Orders can take anywhere from 1-3 business weeks to fulfill depending on the size of the order and the time of year. Please order well in advance of when you think you might need it! Short notice / rush orders may be subject to an additional fee. I strongly suggest having at least 2 playable reeds in your case at all times.

Need some extra support with RCM or undergraduate music theory exams? I am pleased to offer music theory tutoring in-person and online.

I have over 8 years of tutoring and teaching experience with students from ages 5 to 35 in a variety of subjects. During music theory sessions, we'll work together to set and meet your educational goals. Tutoring sessions will include practicing different strategies for success, working through practice problems, and learning real-world applications of theory concepts.
